Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Wisconsin Schools

August 23, 2024

Statement from Diverse and Resilient President & CEO, Chris Allen

Title IX is a federal law that has existed since 1972 to prohibit sex discrimination in education.  This crucial law protects all students, including LGBTQ+ youth, from discrimination in our schools. It is deeply troubling to see attempts to exempt many schools across Wisconsin from adopting updated policies that comply with the latest Title IX regulations. This comes at a time when these LGBTQ+ students need our support the most.

At Diverse and Resilient, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported at school, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation. These protections are essential for ensuring that LGBTQ+ students can learn and thrive without fear of being treated unfairly. We are alarmed by the efforts to undermine Title IX and remove these critical protections. Even more concerning are the threatening behaviors from individuals and groups who are working to erode these rights. Such actions are harmful and dangerous, and they have no place in our community.

We strongly condemn any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or harass those who support Title IX and the rights of LGBTQ+ students. This isn’t just about following the law; it’s about standing up for what is right and ensuring that every student is treated with dignity and respect.

We call on our community and our leaders to consider the harmful impact weakened Title IX policies will have on the safety and well-being of all students. Now, more than ever, we need to come together to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ youth and ensure that every school in Wisconsin is a safe and welcoming place for all.

Diverse and Resilient will continue to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ students and work tirelessly towards a future where every student can go to school knowing they are valued and supported.
