Summer Youth Intern Position Summary:

Supported by the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention’s Summer of Healing Award, the Youth Intern will examine the impact of community and school-based violence on LGBTQ+ youth. Youth Intern will work under the supervision of the Community Programs Coordinator and Youth Programs Coordinator in collaboration with the Community Programs Team. The Youth Intern will develop and implement two community events focused on creating safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and their families, while increasing awareness of resources and services available for creating safe and affirming environments.

Reporting Relationship:

  • Reports to Community Programs Coordinator and Youth Programs Coordinator with overall guidance from the Director of Community Programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruit participants and facilitate events for LGBTQ+ youth ages 13-24
  • Operate with a sex positive approach and concrete understanding about sexual wellness, pregnancy, consent, abortion, and overall willingness to communicate these topics effectively.
  • Administer program evaluation tools and input data into databases/systems.
  • Maintains data on program activity and assists with program tracking and narratives.
  • Host and promote Trans and Queer educational and community spaces through community outreach, social media postings, and collaboration with community partners.
  • Functions in a friendly and helpful manner with clients and outside partners.
  • Demonstrating confidentiality when necessary.
  • Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure a positive, constructive environment within the program, and throughout the agency.
  • Understand the overall mission and vision of D&R.
  • Reinforce the agency’s commitment to cultural competence and racial equity.

Specialized Know-how & Requirements:

  • Background working/engaging with BIPOC queer and trans people, with a focus on youth.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. Enjoys public outreach and public speaking.
  • Excellent detail-oriented organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to make well-analyzed appropriate decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a background check by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
  • Sharing a commitment to Diverse & Resilient’s mission to achieve health equity and improve the safety and well-being of LGBTQ people and communities in Wisconsin.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to learn software applications unique to the organization (i.e., graphics software, data reporting software, spreadsheets, etc.).

Compensation:

The Summer Youth Intern position is a part-time position offering $20 per hour for 20 hours a week. This is a temporary position available from June 15, 2023, through August 31, 2023.
