Be Y.O.U. (Be Young, Original, & Unique) brings together a small group of young people called Core Group Leaders who help plan outreach events within their community designed around a theme of HIV and STI prevention. In addition to the Core Group, Be Y.O.U. includes what are called Mgroups. These are single-session interventions where participants learn risk reduction strategies and ways to talk to their friends about sex and how to protect themselves against HIV and STIs.
Be Y.O.U. is designed for gay and bisexual youth between the ages of 14 and 20. The focus of this project is to reach youth who do not know their HIV status, reduce their risk factors, and guide them into HIV testing services. While the target population for Be Y.O.U. is young gay and bisexual men, the outreach events and Mgroups are open to all LGBT youth, ages 14 to 20.
Be Y.O.U. began meeting in Fall 2012. It is based on Mpowerment, which is an evidence-based intervention that focuses on strengthening an entire community through diffusion of ideas.
