Bayard Rustin Centennial Celebration, including a screening of “Brother Outsider”
LOCATION: Bucketworks, 706 S. 5th St., Milwaukee, WI 53204 (Bucketworks is located on S. 5th St. between National Ave and Pierce St., next to La Perla)
Diverse & Resilient presents a celebration of the life and work of African American and LGBT civil rights pioneer Bayard Rustin, including a screening of the documentary on his life, “Brother Outsider”. Rustin, who would have turned 100 years old in March, was perhaps best known as the man who taught the principles of non-violent resistance to Martin Luther King, Jr and who organized the 1963 March on Washington (where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech). Rustin was also an openly gay African American man whose great achievements were hidden from public view because of his sexual orientation.
This event will pay tribute to Bayard Rustin’s life and work by including representation from different community groups presenting opportunities for you to get involved in a variety of actions. We will be showing the award-winning documentary “Brother Outsider” (http://rustin.org) at 6:30pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. Non-perishable food donations to benefit Pathfinders (http://www.pathfindersmke.org) and Walker’s Point Youth and Family Center (http://www.walkerspoint.org) will be accepted at the door and are greatly appreciated!
